Obstacles to overcome
When high-caliber people consider a move to another employer, there are many psychological obstacles to overcome if they are to make the shift. Although some people treat job offers as a bargaining tool with their existing employers, many more apply and accept jobs in good faith – but still renege on the offer at the last moment. Why is that?
Reputation matters
In our business, successful individuals build up a personal network of contacts that can be vital in helping them to achieve their own objectives. They know their way around the organization and they know how to make it work for them. Also, they will have built a reputation among colleagues as a significant player; although some of the individuals we want to hire may also enjoy wider industry recognition, the respect of one’s immediate colleagues is an important contributor to self-worth.
A guide to the unknown
All of this we expect people to give up when they move to J.P. Morgan. It’s true that we tend to recruit confident, self-reliant and sociable people who can march into the unknown with reasonable assurance. But we want to make it easier for those individuals to make the switch; more particularly, we want to ensure that whether people choose to join us or not to join us, they make that decision for all the right reasons.
Hello colleague
We have put a number of processes in place that are designed to help new colleagues settle in and feel at home as soon as possible. We would like you to tell candidates about these facilities as early as possible in the attraction and selection cycle; we believe they can make a decisive impact on the outcome.
