We define our culture through the five attributes of performance, partnership, meritocracy, inclusion, and directness. All these themes are equally important; together they provide a coherent value system that helps us to do first-class business, in a first-class way. They are also overwhelmingly concerned with how we work together as colleagues and partners.
When we compare what we say about our culture against the reasons people give for working here, one supports the other. This is not simply to say that J.P. Morgan is an agreeable place to work or that we employ nice people. Actually, this culture won’t suit everyone. Our relationship-based business model requires a level of cooperation and a breadth of business vision that are unusual. If people are uncomfortable with frank, open feedback, or are reluctant to engage with issues beyond their own specialist silo, they are probably not right for J.P. Morgan. Here the culture is real and it contributes directly to business performance.
